“When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, ‘What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!’” (Luke 8:28, NIV84)

Every time I read the encounter between Jesus and the demoniac who had a legion of demons in him I am startled by the fact that the demons knew exactly who Jesus was. They were not thrown off by the fact that the Son of the Most High God was in human form. Although there were many demons in possession of this poor man’s heart, they shuddered in the presence of the humble teacher. Listen to their cry: “What do you want with me … I beg you, don’t torture me!” They knew that they were in the presence of Almighty God and were powerless before Him. They had been wreaking havoc in the life of this poor man but now found themselves powerless before Jesus.

There is something we need to learn here. We look at Jesus and at times we only see the man. We doubt that He is who He says He is. We doubt His ability to address our current situation. We strip Him of His power to save us, thereby weakening our faith to trust in Him. We need to hold this encounter between Jesus and these demons in our minds at all times. We need to know that we, as Christians, have access to the greatest power in the universe. We need to remember that at the name of Jesus “every knee will bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord.” Let’s not let our physical eyes blind us from what our spiritual eyes should see.

May we at all times see and trust Jesus for who He really is!

Peace!
