“But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not. And the gnats were on men and animals. The magicians said to Pharaoh, ‘This is the finger of God.’ But Pharaoh’s heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the Lord had said.” (Exodus 8:18&19)
You face a real problem when you try to mimic or copy the works of God. God will eventually one-up you. That’s right. God doesn’t allow others to take credit for His work. He never has, and He never will. Pharaoh’s magicians had falsely copied turning their staffs into snakes, and water into blood, and producing frogs at will, and now they faced the plague of gnats, which they could not copy. Note their response to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” Duh! It had always been the finger of God. The problem for the magicians was that this time they couldn’t fool Pharaoh. They rightfully and finally admitted that God was behind the plagues they were experiencing. But now the magicians had a real problem. Because of their trickery, Pharaoh had hardened his heart when they seemingly could do what God could do, and now, he refused to heed their warnings that God was behind this mess.
This is why Satan works in the realms of lies and deception. He needs to bend truth so that perspectives and realities can be bent as well. This is why it is so vital that we are firmly rooted into the Word and will of God. There will always be copycats and fakers wanting to dupe us, but we need to resist and defeat them with the truth. Truth is what really is. Everything else is a lie. What we know about God through His Word and through the ways He has dealt with us is what’s real. God is the real deal! Let’s not fall for the imitators and the copycats.
