“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.” (Romans 1:18, NIV84)
In our quest for understanding truth from a biblical perspective, we now turn to the apostle Paul. In his letter to the Romans he expressed great concern for the suppression of the truth. Paul declared that suppression of the truth brings God’s wrath upon the suppressors. God puts up with a lot as He deals with a fallen world He wishes to redeem. But there is one thing He will not tolerate. He will not tolerate the blocking, suppressing, and lying about the very truth that alone will redeem humanity. Get in the way of God’s Word reaching people who need to hear it, and you will face the very wrath of God. It doesn’t matter if you are a lay person or a pastor, a legislator or a judge, a president or a king. If you stand in the way of God’s Word, then watch out! God has been known to destroy nations because of their rejection of His Word (Truth).
In the United States there is an ever increasing desire to suppress the Word of God. It is discredited by many as foolishness. The truths of God’s Word are being washed away by relativism and skepticism. This movement has gotten so strong that there is not an area of American life that it has not touched. This suppression is in the classrooms and the courtrooms. It is in the universities and in the sanctuary. We have lost any concept of absolute truth and have done away with God. History, and the apostle Paul, are warning us that there is always a price to pay when God’s Word is suppressed. Just look at what God did to Israel and Judah. Look what He did to the secular regimes of communism. God will not allow His Word to be silence, mocked, or suppressed.
As Christians, we need to be bold in our defense of the truth. We need to go against the current stream of relativism and boldly proclaim the absolute truths of God’s Word. We need to resist the current suppression and reveal the wickedness behind these efforts. We need to make sure that God’s Word is freely proclaimed in our society and around the world.
