“…the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:17, NIV84)
The Spirit of God is truth, too. The Scriptures declare that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all sources of truth. As Christians, we know the truth because the Spirit of God dwells in us. When I think about the Spirit of God, I think about the intimacy of relationship within the Trinity. I think about the love and the communication that takes place within their relationship. I also think about the intimacy that God wants to have with you and me when He indwells us with the Holy Spirit when we come to faith. God does not hold truth at bay. He doesn’t hide the truth from us and force us to find it by jumping through religious and meditational hoops. No! He is glad to indwell His truth in our hearts as He gifts us with the presence of His Holy Spirit.
It is important to understand what Jesus is saying in the verse above. The (secular) world cannot know or accept the truth because it does not know God. Knowing God is the key to understanding truth and knowing the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is our responsibility to continuously witness to the world that absolute truth does exist and it can only be found when one knows and accepts that God is the source of that truth. We do not need to be anxious about what we are going to say because the Spirit of God will provide us the words to use. Remember, it is His truth we share, not our own. It is our job to be willing to speak. It is God’s job to provide power and persuasion to the words.
May we sense the presence of the Spirit of truth in our lives today.
