“When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”’ (Exodus 3:4&5 NIV84)

Have you ever stood on holy ground? Have you ever been in the presence of your holy God? I mean in His presence in such a way that you could physically feel the spiritual reality. If you have, it is a moment that you will never forget. If you haven’t, I pray that soon God will reveal Himself to you in such a way. It is an awesome experience. The key word there is “awe”. Moses works his way closer to the bush that has him curious and amazed. Although on fire, the bush is not being consumed. As Moses draws closer, he is met with a voice; with words spoken from within the bush. What does he hear? His name! The voice within the burning bush speaks his name, “Moses, Moses…” Just stop there for a second. It was amazing enough that he was experiencing an impossibility: a bush burning but not being consumed by its flames. But now he hears his name called. Moses responds with the only words possible, “Here I am!”. He has to be stunned. Before he can say or think anything else, he is told to take off his sandals and not come any closer “for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Now he is awed! He knows he is experiencing something supernatural. Just put the pieces together: burning bush not being consumed, voice knows his name, and the place he is standing on is holy ground.

All of a sudden Moses is a long way from Midian. He is a long way from his wife and children. He is a long way from Egypt. He is in the presence of God Himself, and God is calling out his name. WOW!! But let me tell you something more amazing than Moses’ encounter with God. Everywhere you stand is holy ground. Let me explain. God has called you by name (Is. 43:1); He has made you born again (John 1:12&13; John 3:6&7) He has filled you with His Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 3:16). You are a living breathing temple of the Holy Spirit. What God has done in you, and continues to do through you, is significantly greater than the encounter with Moses. Every time you open your Bible to meditate on God’s Word, you are on holy ground. Every time you are in God’s house to worship, you are on holy ground. Every time you live out your Christian faith to the Glory of our risen Savior, you are on Holy ground.

Let’s be in awe today and every day of what God can do to make our ordinary extraordinary, even holy!

Peace!

Pastor Tom
