“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21, NASB95)

“For to me, to live is Christ.” This is hard for us to fully understand. Central to Paul’s understanding of the Christian life is that Christ now lives in us and we in Him. He says in Galatians 2:20, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me” and in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” Paul’s understanding was that when he became a believer in Jesus Christ God re-created him and made him new. He was no longer the same individual. For Paul, Christianity was not just cognitive assent, it was life-altering transformation.

Many Christians today think that Christianity is like being a Republican or Democrat. You see, being a Republican or Democrat doesn’t necessary change who you are, but being a Christian must! Christians have been born again and have the Holy Spirit living within them. We are no longer the same people. We have been re-created and transformed into the image of Jesus.

As we go about doing the things we do on a daily basis, Jesus must go with us. He must cause us to see the day from His eyes. Our words and actions must come from Him. To live is to be in Christ and to have Christ be in us.

May we join Paul in dedicating every moment of every day to Him.

Peace!

Pastor Tom
