“For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.” Acts 13:36–37 (NIV84)

It is said of king David that “he was a man after God’s own heart.” The same must be true of the King of Kings who was the very Son of God who came to earth to share with us the Father’s heart. David fought valiantly on behalf of the people of God, and Jesus fought the greatest enemy of all, death, and was victorious not only for Himself, but for you and me. Brothers and sisters in Christ, in our verses for today, Paul was pleading with Jewish and Gentile believers in God to understand that in Jesus, God has given to us one even greater than King David. Even though David was a man after God’s own heart, he was also a sinner who eventually tasted death. Jesus, on the other hand, was sinless but bore the sins of all humanity and rose victorious from the dead, having crushed the Devil’s head; in His death and resurrection He won salvation for all mankind.

Although David was a great man with a heart for God, Jesus was and is a greater man with God’s true heart! Today, may our hope be certain because we have a Savior who, although He died, did not see decay but rose to life again. In Jesus we have hope, peace and certainty that we will rise to eternal life.

Peace!

Pastor Tom
